PPH and the Continuing Risks of Recalled Diet Drugs

The diet drugs Fen-Phen and Redux were pulled from the market in 1997 after widespread reports of heart valve problems among their users. Even though these dangerous medications are no longer available, they are still causing problems for people who took them years ago.

Fen-Phen and Redux have been linked to primary pulmonary hypertension, or PPH, an incurable and progressive heart problem. Without a lung transplant, it is often fatal. (The dangerous drug Avandia has also been associated with PPH.)

Many people who took Fen-Phen or Redux are only now being diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension. You may not experience symptoms of PPH for 10 to 20 years after you stopped taking the drug.

About Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

PPH is also known as pulmonary hypertension and primary arterial hypertension or PAH. It affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. The small arteries in the lungs become narrowed and blocked, increasing pressure in larger pulmonary arteries. This forces the heart to work harder to pump blood to the lungs. Eventually, the heart weakens and fails.

Symptoms of PPH include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Chest pressure or pain
  • Swelling in the ankles and legs
  • Racing heart or palpitations
  • Bluish tint to lips and skin

If you or a loved one have PPH, it is important to speak to a lawyer about your legal options. Not just any attorney has the experience and knowledge you need. Please contact the Law Offices of J.
