MRI Contrast Agents Linked to Life-Threatening Disease
Gadolinium is an ingredient in many contrast dyes given to some patients before they undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test. It's used to improve the quality of MRI images, helping doctors recognize potential abnormalities.
The FDA has issued a boxed warning, its strongest type of warning, about the relationship between gadolinium-containing contrast agents and a potentially fatal kidney disease called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).
If you or a member of your family developed NSF after undergoing an MRI, please contact the Law Offices of J. Neal Rodgers, PLLC. Call toll free 888-471-2637. Defective drug lawyer J. Neal Rodgers will determine whether you may be able to pursue financial compensation for the harm you have suffered because of exposure to this dangerous medication.
About NSF
NSF is a rare and deadly disease of the skin, muscles and bones. NSF causes the skin to thicken to the point that patients have difficulty bending their joints and extending their limbs. In some cases the muscles are so severely contracted that they break bones. In the most severe of cases, patients may be unable to walk, or fully extend the joints of their arms, hands, legs, and feet. There is no known treatment for NSF.
Those most at risk for developing gadolinium-related NSF are people with acute or chronic kidney disease and liver transplant patients just before or after transplant surgery.
There are five FDA-approved contrast agents that contain gadolinium: Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK, and ProHance. Cases of NSF have been reported in patients receiving all five contrast agents.
