Raptiva Linked to Potentially Fatal Brain Infection
The pharmaceutical company Genentech voluntarily recalled its psoriasis drug, Raptiva, from the U.S. market June 8, 2009. The drug had been linked to progressive multifocal leaukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare, incurable and potentially fatal infection of the brain.

About Raptiva and PML
Approved by the FDA in 2003, Raptiva was administered in a once-a-week injection to treat adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The FDA warned Raptiva patients and prescribers of the risks associated with Raptiva in February of 2009 in response to reports of four patients with Raptiva-associated PML, three of whom died.
Symptoms of PML
Raptiva patients may have experienced some of the following PML symptoms without ever being diagnosed with the disease:
- Headaches
- Loss of coordination, clumsiness
- Impaired speech or loss of language ability (aphasia)
- Memory loss
- Vision problems
- Progressive weakness of the legs and arms
- Deterioration of mental abilities
Other Risks of Raptiva
In addition to PML, Raptiva has been associated with numerous other health risks, including:
