Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a painful disease of the skin and mucus membranes that can be triggered by a number of common prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers and antibiotic drugs. In some cases it can be deadly.

If you or a member of your family developed Stevens Johnson Syndrome, you may be able to recover financial compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and other damages.

Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Stevens Johnson Syndrome can be a life-threatening condition that typically starts with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, cough and irritated eyes. Within a few days, other symptoms develop, including:

  • Skin pain
  • A quickly-spreading red or purple rash
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face and tongue
  • Blisters on the skin, and in the mouth, eyes and nose
  • Shedding of the skin
  • Lung damage

The skin of people with SJS may slough off in sheets. Patients may be treated in burn units. If the skin lesions become infected, the risk of infection is high. Infections and lung problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are serious and potentially fatal complications.

A Link With Common Drugs

There is an association between Stevens Johnson Syndrome and over-the-counter drugs, prescription pain relievers and antibiotic drugs such as Dilantin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Bextra, Remicade, Daypro, Topamax and children's Motrin.
